NDA Finalises Seat-Sharing for Bihar Assembly Polls

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar has finalised its seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming elections to the 243-member assembly. Both Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest 101 seats each, while the remaining 41 seats have been distributed among smaller allies. This pivotal decision could determine the future political landscape of Bihar.

Under the new agreement, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) led by Union Minister Chirag Paswan will contest 29 constituencies. The Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) of Jitan Ram Manjhi will contest six seats, and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha of Upendra Kushwaha is also set to fight in six seats.

This election marks a significant shift in dynamics, as it is the first time since 2005 that the JD(U) will not contest more seats than the BJP. This change reflects the BJP’s growing influence and JD(U)’s declining standing in Bihar’s political arena, potentially shifting the balance of power in the state.

BJP’s Bihar poll in-charge Dharmendra Pradhan expressed optimism about the upcoming elections, stating that all partners reached the decision “in a cordial manner.” He confidently added, “Bihar is ready for another NDA government,” suggesting a united front among the alliance members.

Chirag Paswan, Jitan Ram Manjhi, and JD(U) leader Sanjay Kumar Jha echoed this sentiment by describing the discussions as “amicable and unanimous.” Their collective agreement stands in contrast to earlier speculation about dissatisfaction among coalition members following the distribution of seats.

Amidst concerns, Jitan Ram Manjhi publicly accepted the allocation, asserting, “We are satisfied with what we have received… I will stay with Prime Minister Narendra Modi till my last breath.” His statement indicates a commitment to the NDA, which is crucial for maintaining political stability.

In the previous 2020 assembly polls, the JD(U) contested 115 seats, while the BJP fielded candidates in 110 seats. The election results were telling, with JD(U) winning only 43 seats compared to the BJP’s 74 seats. This outcome strained the alliance and led to a brief exit of Nitish Kumar from the NDA, highlighting the challenges they faced.

The upcoming Bihar Assembly elections will take place in two phases — on November 6 and 11, followed by the counting of votes scheduled for November 14. As both major parties prepare for these crucial elections, the seat-sharing agreement has propelled the NDA into the limelight, raising questions about voter sentiment and the future governance of Bihar.
