In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms, one of the heaviest babies delivered at the institution. The baby was born on October 25, 2025, at 1:20 PM to a diabetic mother.
Shortly after birth, the newborn developed severe respiratory distress, which prompted immediate admission to the NICU for intensive management. The baby’s large-for-gestational-age status necessitated specialized neonatal respiratory support to address the critical condition. The medical team carefully monitored various health parameters, including respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, and neurological activity.
The infant showed significant improvements over the following days, demonstrating a positive response to the interventions. As the baby stabilized, the team gradually weaned the respiratory support, crucial for a successful recovery. The last 72 hours before discharge were particularly promising; the baby maintained stable independent breathing and normal oxygenation levels while exhibiting no signs of apnea or desaturation.
Under the expert guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of Pediatrics, GMC Doda, the case exemplifies the high level of care and teamwork within the hospital. Renowned faculty members, including Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma, contributed to the successful management.
Special appreciation goes to the nursing and paramedical staff, whose vigilant monitoring and compassionate care were pivotal in the baby’s recovery process. Their unwavering commitment underscores the hospital’s dedication to providing exemplary healthcare.
This success reflects the growing expertise in neonatal care at GMC Doda, reinforcing its commitment to delivering quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children across the region. The successful handling of such complex cases emphasizes the facility’s capability to manage challenging situations effectively.
