Naib Subedar Ravinder Singh, a 29-year-old ace shooter from the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU), Mhow, achieved a historic milestone by clinching the gold medal in the Men’s 50m Free Pistol event at the ISSF World Championships. The event took place from October 16-25, 2023, at the Egypt International Olympic City Range.
Ravinder triumphed over 47 top shooters from around the world, showcasing exceptional skill and resilience. He began his competition with a modest score of 93 in his first series. However, he shifted gears as he shot 98, 94, 95, 93, and concluded with an impressive 96, accumulating a total of 569 points. This stellar performance placed him ahead of South Korea’s Kim Cheongyong (556) and Individual Neutral Athlete Anton Aristarkhov (556), who secured silver and bronze, respectively.
This achievement bears greater significance as Ravinder had been away from training for over two weeks due to the recent birth of his daughter. In preparation for the championship, he managed only 4–5 days of practice. His discipline and focus led to a career-defining victory, with many considering it one of the greatest comebacks in sports.
Ravinder’s individual excellence not only brought him personal glory, but also contributed to India’s success in the ISSF World Championships. He played a pivotal role in helping the country secure a silver medal in the 50m Free Pistol team event alongside fellow shooters Kamaljeet (540) and Yogesh Kumar (537). Their combined total of 1646 points was just two points short of South Korea’s gold-winning score.
Earlier this year, Ravinder earned a silver medal at the National Games. Reflecting on his latest achievement, he expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, “It’s not my personal achievement but for all those who stood behind me. I am thankful to my family and the Army for their support.” His humility and acknowledgement of his supporters resonate deeply with the youth.
In recognition of his remarkable achievement, former MLA Ashwani Kumar Sharma hailed Ravinder as a role model. He commended the shooter’s dedication, hard work, and commitment, inspiring countless others to pursue their dreams.
Upon his return to Bishnah, Ravinder received a grand welcome from residents. Hundreds gathered in the streets to celebrate his historic achievement, waving flags and chanting slogans in his honor. The atmosphere buzzed with pride as people expressed gratitude for Ravinder’s contributions to sports and his representation of India on the global stage.
The success of Ravinder Singh stands as a testament to India’s growing prowess in shooting sports. His journey encourages aspiring shooters to strive for excellence, reminding them that dedication and resilience pave the way to success.
