Massive Landslide Cuts Off Pangi Valley After Heavy Rains

A significant landslide struck the Pangi Valley in Himachal Pradesh after continuous heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. The incident occurred on the Sansari–Kullu–Manali road, which lies at the border of Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti districts, cutting off the entire valley from the rest of the state.

The landslide affected a nearly 60-metre stretch of the road, rendering it completely inaccessible. Eyewitnesses described the scene as devastating, with the entire hillside collapsing and leaving no trace of the road.

Approximately 40-50 individuals, who were travelling in private vehicles and taxis, found themselves stranded at locations like Sugalwas and Kadu Nullah. Many endured freezing conditions overnight, unable to move even on foot due to the severity of the landslide.

Authorities have stepped in by relocating several stranded individuals to safer spots, while the Border Roads Organisation has commenced operations aimed at restoring connectivity and reopening the vital route to Pangi Valley.

The Meteorological Department responded to the ongoing adverse weather by issuing alerts across the state. An Orange Alert forecasts hailstorms, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds, particularly impacting districts such as Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Solan. Additionally, a Yellow Alert is active for Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, and Sirmaur.

Weather conditions are set to remain rainy, with forecasts extending until April 13. Areas throughout the state experienced widespread rainfall, particularly Sarahan, which recorded the highest at 38.5 mm. Hailstorms have also caused damage to crops in the Shimla district, and higher elevations may experience snowfall.

The temperature in Himachal Pradesh has dropped significantly, with regions like Kalpa and Kukumseri reporting lows of 0.4°C. Daytime temperatures have fallen to 3–9°C below normal across various locations due to the ongoing adverse weather.

The persistent wet conditions are attributed to a Western Disturbance affecting the region, with expectations for another system to influence the weather from April 11. Authorities urge residents and travellers to exercise caution and avoid routes prone to landslides. They also recommend following official weather advisories to ensure safety during this challenging weather period.
