Lok Sabha Adjourns Amid Opposition Protests Over Key Issues

The Lok Sabha adjourned on Friday amid ongoing protests from Opposition members over critical issues including the NEET paper leak and the alleged theft of Ram temple donation funds. The session will reconvene on Monday.

During a chaotic day, the Opposition’s protests overshadowed the passage of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which moved forward without a debate. This incident exemplifies the ongoing legislative tensions.

Amidst the turmoil, ministers in the ruling coalition attempted to maintain order. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju emphasized that the Opposition cannot dictate which ministers respond to their inquiries. He remarked, “Home Minister Amit Shah comes to Parliament every day and stays until late night,” urging the Opposition to halt their disruptive behavior.

The chairperson for the day, Dilip Saikia, intervened, asking the protesting members to return to their seats. “Please cooperate,” he said, seeking to restore order in the House as the outcry continued.

The Zero Hour, a critical period for discussions, saw barely 16 minutes of proceedings before adjournment due to the ongoing protests. The Question Hour, essential for public accountability, also faced disruptions, as it was adjourned till noon.

This turmoil marks a continual trend in the ongoing Monsoon session, which commenced on July 20. The session has seen repeated disruptions stemming from disagreements between the governing party and the Opposition.

The frequent adjournments reflect deeper tensions within Indian politics, particularly concerning sensitive issues that have sparked public outrage. As the Opposition demands more accountability and responses regarding police actions during recent NEET protests, the government faces mounting scrutiny.

Experts suggest these disruptions may impact legislative productivity, as critical discussions on social and economic policies remain stalled. As the Lok Sabha prepares for its return on Monday, all eyes will be on how both sides address the growing public concerns.
