KL Rahul Praises Balanced Galle Pitch After India’s 165-Run Win

Indian cricketer KL Rahul praised the Galle pitch after India secured a commanding 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test match held from March 1-5, 2023. The match showcased a balanced contest throughout its five days, appealing to both batters and bowlers.

In this thrilling encounter, Indian all-rounder Manav Suthar emerged as the star, delivering a match-winning performance that included a sensational 10-wicket haul in just his second Test. His strong showing propelled India to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. On the batting front, Devdutt Padikkal scored a brilliant 167, earning him the Player of the Match award and helping set up India’s dominant total.

Post-match, KL Rahul commended the Galle pitch for providing an excellent cricketing surface that supported various playing styles. He noted that the pitch aided spin bowling while still being conducive for disciplined batting. Sonal Dinusha of Sri Lanka illustrated this balance, scoring 100 in the first innings and following it with a notable 84 in the second, despite the team’s eventual defeat.

Rahul remarked, “I think it was a great Test match. The wicket played really well throughout the five days. There was something for spinners, but batters who applied themselves could score runs. We have seen Sonal from the Sri Lankan team; he batted beautifully, showing a clear game plan to counter the spinners.” He added that the contributions from both pace and spin bowling made the match an ideal showcase of Test cricket.

The weather added an extra layer of tension at the end of the match when rain started to fall right after India’s victory. KL Rahul expressed relief at securing the win, particularly as rain clouds loomed. He explained the team’s focus on taking quick wickets to dismantle Sri Lanka’s batting order, which helped them maintain composure in the face of impending rain.

“Just relieved, honestly! We kept looking at the clouds, and we knew a big shower was coming. We didn’t want to delay the game,” Rahul stated. “We were trying to get the wickets quickly and once we broke the significant partnership between Keshara Nuwantha and Dinusha, we felt confident we could finish it off.”

India concluded the match by bowling Sri Lanka out for 206 while defending a formidable target of 372. Suthar capped off his spectacular performance with figures of 6/55 in the second innings, marking his maiden 10-wicket haul.

On Day 5, Sri Lanka began at 84/4, relying on a strong partnership between Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva. The duo added 95 runs before Jadeja dismissed Dhananjaya for 59. Dinusha continued to resist with an impressive 84, yet Suthar struck three crucial times in the 76th over, paving the way for India’s victory.

India posted 464 in their first innings, benefiting from Padikkal’s stellar 167 and KL Rahul’s solid 82. Sri Lanka replied with 284, featuring Dinusha’s century, before India set a target of 372 by being bowled out for 193 in their second innings.
