Indian batter Sarfaraz Khan has officially joined the Team India camp ahead of the highly anticipated first Test against Sri Lanka, set to commence on August 15 in Galle. Sarfaraz steps in as a replacement for India’s number three, Sai Sudharsan, who has been ruled out of the series due to an injury.
Sarfaraz, who last donned the Indian jersey in November 2024 against New Zealand, took to Instagram to share a selfie in Indian colours, showcasing his transformative fitness journey. His commitment has evidently paid off, as he aims to make a significant impact on the field.
The upcoming two-match series carries weight for both teams, particularly given India’s recent struggles. They suffered their first Test series whitewash on home soil against New Zealand last November, a rare setback in Indian cricket. Sarfaraz made his Test debut against England earlier that same year.
Despite his limited appearances, Sarfaraz boasts commendable statistics for India, accumulating 371 runs in six Test matches at an impressive average of 37.10. His standout achievement includes a century and three fifties, with a highest score of 150.
His selection follows a stellar domestic season, where he scored 429 runs in seven Ranji Trophy matches, averaging 53.62 with one century and a fifty, peaking with a remarkable score of 227.
In the T20 format, Sarfaraz also excelled in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, amassing 329 runs across seven innings at a stunning average of 65.80 and a strike rate of 203.09. His performances included a century and three fifties.
Furthermore, Sarfaraz demonstrated his prowess in the 50-over format during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring 303 runs in just six matches, averaging 75.75 with a strike rate of 190.56, complemented by one century and two fifties.
His remarkable domestic form earned him a contract with the Chennai Super Kings for Rs 75 lakh. He had a decent stint with them, scoring 161 runs in seven innings, averaging 23.00 with a strike rate nearing 170.
Notably, Sarfaraz recently showcased his skills in the Mumbai T20 League for Aakash Tigers MWS, scoring 161 runs in five innings, maintaining an average of 32.20 and a strike rate of 214.67, including a half-century.
India enters the Sri Lanka series under the leadership of Shubman Gill, currently positioned fifth in the World Test Championship standings. With four wins and four losses from nine matches, India holds a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150.
The updated squad for the Test series includes: Shubman Gill (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi, and Sarfaraz Khan.
